have met with nelson mandela in the past. we are waiting word from the white house. president obama is sure to have something to say about this in the next bit. most of the comments we are seeing already from congress, praising nelson mandela, the life he lived and what he meant not only to south africa, but to the world as a whole. i expect we are going to get a lot more of those comments in the next bit as people take stock of this man's life. he had been sick for sometime. we spoke in the last hour about the fact that president obama was in africa when there was a concern that maybe nelson mandela's health was failing him then and perhaps the president might visit. that didn't happen at the time, and now we get word that at age 95, nelson mandela has passed on. i expect to hear a significant amount of reaction from the united states to this news. >> we have gotten news that president obama will be making a statement at about 20 minutes past the hour. in that report you spoke about mandela, of nelson and the lack of rancor he had toward past enemies. that has not meant peaceful t

this because by november of next year, you are going to be running for with obama care and people will have discovered. he cautioned patience. he said everybody needs to take a deep breath and everybody needs to go to the website and explore their options and then sign up. they have not had a problem getting people to sign up. the polling said that young people don't have health care for the same reason that everyone doesn't. too much money. yet if they go to the website, they are likely to find a plan to afford health care because they get a subsidy. >> that is a fascinating statistic. 40% of those signing up being under age 35. >> i am not sure they have done special outreach. the fact is when it's available and easily accessible from your home and on your computer, the people in general do understand that a bicycle accident, playing touch football, you can get a broken ankle and end up going to the emergency room and suddenly you are thousands of dollars in debt. if you can go to the website and sign up for a plan that is between 50 and $100 a month, it would be very, very well worth it.

's the next thing i want to ask you. i'd like you to come up with a policy you can recommend to president obama on the air right now that would be better than the minimum wage. because recall, 40% of unemployed people today are long-term unemployed, disproportionately in the bottom 20% and those people will be hurt by minimum wage increases. but you and i agree that minimum wage people could make more money to support their families better. what's a better policy starting right now that president obama should be talking about instead of what he's doing, which is hurting poor people such they can make more money no matter how much it costs. >> look, just to be clear. i like the question, but i don't agree with the premise. i do think a moderate increase would help. to answer the part of your question that i agree with, here's what i think he should do. the earned income tax is a very important pro work subsidy. this is a good way to help low-wage people. but for childless adults, adults who don't have kids, it's rea y really -- i would increase the childless adult part of the earned incom
